Welcome
to the Boston
Chapter of INFORMS
LATEST NEWS:
(10/24/08) Our next talk is on a subject that many of us
find interesting and/or very relevant to our work: data mining. Please join
us to welcome Prof. Karl Rexer as he talks about his
perspectives and findings on this topic.
(10/14/08) The jobs section is
being updated consistently with new jobs in the OR fields. Have a job to
post? Please let me know. Found a
job here? We’d love to know about it!
(9/16/08) Our 2008-2009 season kicks off with a talk by
the distinguished Dimitris Bertsimas, titled OR in health
care: opportunities, perspectives and progress. It’s a topic that gets a
lot of press in this election season. Now is your chance to come hear some of
the science!
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Boston
INFORMS members:
To kick off
the new academic year, your organizing committee met to plan a stimulating
program. At the time of this writing I am pleased to announce that our first
speaker will be Prof. DIMITRIS BERTSIMAS, Boeing professor of Operations
Research and the co-director of the Operations Research Center, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT). The talk will be on October 1st, 2008.
While we
are very appreciative that Verizon and Emptoris permit us to host many of our
meetings at their facility we are constantly looking for new venues. If your organization would consider being a
host please contact me.
I am
pleased that our membership and more importantly our participation in the
Boston Chapter continues to rise. However, it is my firm belief that the
number of potential members in our chapter is at least an order of magnitude
larger than its actual size. I welcome suggestions in how to unlock that
potential: Are there different types of meetings, at different times or
different places which would help? Are there important non-speaker activities
we should be more engaged in?
As a
small first step to support our chapter I hope when you attend one of our
meetings you will bring one or two colleagues who never attended a meeting to
check us out. If we could double our membership we could explore options for
the Chapter which we cannot currently do.
We are
approaching chapter membership renewal time. Please consider doing so as well
as encouraging colleagues to join. The cost of membership to the Boston chapter is at most
$15 and while we encourage members to join the parent organization they are
not required to.
Finally,
I write to remind you that last year I was elected to the Board of Directors
of INFORMS (as VP Societies/Sections). I hope Boston Chapters members will
use that as an opportunity to give me (National) INFORMS feedback that you
would like me to take back to the Boardroom.
